Nordic football associations call for leadership reform at FIFA
On August 23, 2026, the football associations of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, and the Faroe Islands held a meeting in Helsinki to formally express a lack of confidence in FIFA president Gianni Infantino. The six Nordic nations have withdrawn their support for his leadership, joining a growing coalition of regional confederations including UEFA, AFC, and CONCACAF that are calling for his resignation.
The primary catalyst for this discord was the controversial 'FIFA Forward Enterprise' proposal, which sought to sell shares of FIFA competitions, including the World Cup, to private investment funds. Although the proposal was ultimately withdrawn due to widespread backlash, the Nordic federations are now demanding an independent external investigation into the governance processes surrounding the initiative. They are calling for a complete evaluation of FIFA’s decision-making framework to ensure transparency, accountability, and proper checks and balances within the organization.
