Large-scale search for 75-year-old woman missing in Tsakkistra

A massive search operation is underway in the village of Tsakkistra for 75-year-old Erato Athanasiou, known locally as Toula Zizirou. The woman was last seen walking in the area around 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, August 23, 2026, and has been officially missing since 11:00 a.m. that day. Due to the proximity of the area to a large forest, local authorities have faced significant challenges in their efforts to locate her.

The search is being coordinated by the Morphou Police Department, which established a crisis center to manage the deployment of specialized units. These include the Fire Service, EMAK with tracking dogs, the Civil Defense, the Department of Forests, the Game and Fauna Service, and various volunteer groups. Drones and helicopters have also been deployed to scan the terrain. Local community leaders have cancelled planned cultural events to focus entirely on the search and have appealed for volunteers with knowledge of the area to assist. As of August 26, the search has entered its fourth day with no results, and authorities continue to urge anyone with information to contact the Morphou Criminal Investigation Department or the Citizen’s Line at 1460.
