Cyprus police report road safety results and launch new campaign against distracted driving

Between August 13 and 15, 2026, Cyprus police recorded 1,680 traffic violations during an intensified three-day operation. The most frequent infractions included 732 speeding incidents, 121 cases of driving under the influence of alcohol, and 242 fines for various illegal parking violations. Additionally, officers issued 77 citations for ignoring traffic signs or signals, 61 for seatbelt non-compliance, 36 for using mobile devices, 20 for lack of motorcycle helmets, 18 for improper overtaking, and 14 for carrying excess passengers.

Following these operations, the police announced a new nationwide campaign focused on curbing distracted driving, scheduled to run from August 24 to 30, 2026. Authorities emphasize that distractions—ranging from using mobile phones to eating, smoking, or adjusting radio settings—significantly increase accident risks by delaying reaction times. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to decrease fatal traffic incidents, with police officials noting that previous interventions successfully improved road flow and safety outcomes.
