Illegal beach equipment in Lara sparks controversy over turtle habitat protection

On August 24, 2026, authorities intervened following reports of illegally placed umbrellas, sunbeds, and tents on the beach at Lara. This site is a critical nesting ground for Caretta caretta and Chelonia mydas sea turtles in the Mediterranean, leading to immediate public backlash and official warnings from the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research (DFMR).

The incident reignited a debate between the Ineia local authority and environmentalists. Deputy Mayor Yiangos Tsivikos proposed organizing a section of the beach to accommodate tourism, citing historical human presence in the Akamas region. However, the Animal Party of Cyprus strongly opposed this, arguing that current environmental pressures make such development unsustainable and incompatible with the area's protected status.

Legal restrictions in the Lara-Toxeftra protected area have been in place since 1989. The DFMR clarified that from June 1 to September 30, it is strictly prohibited to place equipment on the beach or remain there overnight from one hour before sunset to one hour after sunrise, emphasizing that these regulations must be upheld to protect the endangered species.
