United States cites national security to support new Paphos airport road project

The United States has intervened in the long-standing dispute regarding a new access road to Paphos International Airport, citing national security concerns for the first time. The proposal, initiated by the US Air Force’s 435th Contingency Response Squadron based in Germany, aims to secure an alternative emergency route for the “Andreas Papandreou” air base, which shares infrastructure with the civilian airport. This intervention is intended to overcome environmental objections that have previously stalled construction.

Local authorities in Paphos have long advocated for a new, modern road to replace the existing 1960s-era infrastructure, which they argue cannot support the projected increase in passenger traffic resulting from ongoing airport expansion works. The proposed route through the Ezousas river estuary has faced persistent opposition due to its location within the Natura 2000 Ezousas, Xeros, and Diarizou River Estuaries Special Protection Area. By invoking national security, the US hopes to bypass these environmental hurdles, which have prevented the completion of a necessary link to the city and major tourist areas.

Following the American proposal, the Cypriot Ministry of Defence is reportedly reviewing the project. The synergy between airport expansion and the strategic military requirement for a secondary access road remains a critical point of interest for local stakeholders seeking to advance the project.
