Thalpo network launched to support informal caregivers in Cyprus
The Cyprus Informal Carers Empowerment Network, known as 'Thalpo', was officially registered and launched as a non-profit association in the Republic of Cyprus on August 17, 2026. This initiative aims to provide recognition and support to thousands of individuals who deliver unpaid care to the elderly, people with disabilities, and those with chronic health conditions. Such informal care, typically provided by family members and friends, is considered an essential yet often invisible pillar of the national health and social care system.
Following its establishment, Thalpo achieved a significant milestone by becoming a full member of Eurocarers, the European network representing informal carers and their organizations. This membership links the local network with European Union institutions, national governments, and research organizations. By gaining this international status, the organization intends to work collectively to influence policies that support the rights and needs of caregivers across Europe, ensuring that their contribution to society is properly acknowledged and facilitated.
