European leaders visit Kyiv for 35th independence anniversary and approve new aid

On August 24, 2026, European Council President Antonio Costa and several high-ranking officials, including British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, arrived in Kyiv to commemorate the 35th anniversary of Ukraine's independence. Other notable attendees included the Prime Minister of Luxembourg Luc Frieden, Moldovan President Maia Sandu, and Estonian President Alar Karis. During his visit, Antonio Costa received the 'Order of Europe' from President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, reaffirming the European Union's commitment to Ukraine's sovereignty and its future integration into the bloc.

In parallel with the celebrations, the European Commission announced the approval of an additional 6.1 billion euros in aid for Ukraine. This financial package is designated for strengthening the country's military capabilities, specifically for procuring air defense systems, missiles, ammunition, and radar equipment. This new allocation adds to the 16 billion euros previously authorized by the EU, of which 8.35 billion euros have already been disbursed. President Costa emphasized that the ongoing integration process remains a geopolitical necessity and a primary guarantee for long-term security and stability, despite the challenges involved in the accession procedure.
