Measures for traffic management in Strovolos and new signal control systems in Nicosia and Limassol

Authorities in Nicosia are addressing traffic issues on Averof Street near the old Strovolos Town Hall following resident complaints. The Technical Committee, responding to a parliamentary inquiry by Savia Orphanidou, has proposed turning a section of Klearchou Street into a one-way road leading toward Th. Kolokotroni Street. This measure aims to eliminate through-traffic on Averof Street. The proposal requires approval from the Strovolos Municipal Council and the Chief of Police, followed by the installation of new signage by the municipality. As of late August 2026, the plan is pending discussion by the Municipal Council.

In separate developments, the Department of Public Works is implementing a new signaling management system at 15 intersections across Nicosia and Limassol, comprising seven and eight locations respectively. Twenty-five overhead sensors will be installed to monitor real-time traffic, allowing for dynamic adjustments to light cycles to reduce congestion. Before implementation, officials will conduct a baseline study of 49 intersection access points to measure peak-hour queues. These 15 sites were selected because they are currently excluded from the larger Urban Traffic Control System project planned for the cities.
