Fatal motorcycle accident in Larnaca highlights road safety crisis

A 30-year-old motorcyclist, Georgios Georgiou, lost his life on Sunday night following a head-on collision on the Kellia-Troulloi road in Larnaca. Georgiou, a father of two and an employee of the Larnaca District Self-Government Organisation (EOA), was reportedly riding a high-powered motorcycle belonging to a friend when he crossed into the oncoming lane while entering a curve and collided with a saloon vehicle carrying a family. Authorities confirmed that the victim was not wearing a protective helmet, and a post-mortem examination determined the cause of death as a severe head injury.

Following the incident, the EOA Larnaca announced full support for the victim's family, including covering all funeral expenses and holding a memorial tribute. This tragedy brings the total number of road fatalities in Cyprus for 2026 to 26, with over half of these victims being motorcyclists. Police spokesperson Vyronas Vyronos expressed deep concern regarding these figures, noting that while police have increased patrols and awareness campaigns, no 'magic solution' exists. He continues to urge drivers to strictly adhere to the Highway Code as the investigation into the circumstances of the crash remains ongoing.
