AKEL criticizes the government's waste management policy

The opposition party AKEL has launched a fierce attack against the government of Nicos Christodoulides, labeling its approach to national waste management as monumentally incompetent. The party claims that despite ongoing European Union infringement procedures against Cyprus, the administration continues to rely on landfilling for the majority of generated waste. AKEL specifically points to unresolved issues at the Pentakomo and Kosi facilities as evidence of this systemic failure.

In response to the mounting pressure, the government recently announced new waste management plans valued at 162 million euros. However, AKEL argues that these measures fail to address the root causes of the problem and merely perpetuate the unsustainable practice of burying waste. The party further asserts that the current situation is the result of long-term errors and procedural delays inherited from both the current and previous administrations. According to AKEL, the lack of a comprehensive policy leaves the country exposed to EU sanctions and shifts the financial burden of this mismanagement onto local authorities and the public.
