Plans to divert cesspit sewage to Vati plant to relieve Moni facility

The Water Development Department (WDD) of Cyprus is working to mitigate issues at the overburdened Moni water recycling treatment plant by diverting cesspit sewage to the Vati plant. Officials plan to hold a meeting next week with the Vati contractor to finalize arrangements, with the diversion expected to begin as early as September. The Vati facility is currently undergoing an upgrade, which has been handled by a private contractor since February under a five-year agreement, and is projected to be completed by the end of 2026.

Local authorities, including the Limassol district self-government organisation (EOA), are collaborating with the WDD to address the strain on the Moni plant. Concerns have been raised regarding the quality of recycled water, which is reportedly compromised not only by high volumes of cesspit waste but also by suspected illegal industrial dumping into the district's approximately 20,000 manholes. WDD deputy first officer Michalis Michail confirmed that coordination between the agencies is ongoing to solve these operational problems and improve system efficiency. The upgrade at Vati is considered a critical step in managing the district's waste infrastructure and ensuring the long-term viability of water recycling efforts in the region.
