European Commission forecasts significant increase in Cyprus barley yields for 2026

The European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) released a report on August 24, 2026, projecting a substantial increase in barley production for Cyprus this year. According to the monthly crop monitoring bulletin, the expected yield is 2.28 tonnes per hectare, marking a significant improvement over agricultural outcomes from the previous year.

This projection represents a 30% increase compared to the five-year average of 1.76 tonnes per hectare and a 144% increase over the 2025 performance, which stood at only 0.93 tonnes per hectare. The JRC notes that these specific estimates apply to crops covering areas larger than 10,000 hectares. Notably, the report does not provide data for other Cypriot crops, such as wheat, corn, potatoes, sunflowers, and soybeans.

While Cyprus anticipates higher yields, the JRC bulletin highlights a contrasting situation across the European Union. Prolonged high temperatures and severe water shortages have negatively impacted summer crop prospects in western and central parts of Europe, underscoring significant regional variations in agricultural output for the current season.
