Fatal drowning incidents in Limassol and Famagusta

Two separate drowning incidents resulted in the deaths of young men in Cyprus on August 24 and 25, 2026. In the first case, a 21-year-old Afghan national drowned on August 24 after diving from a pier at the Old Port of Limassol. Reports indicate he was accompanied by an acquaintance; while some sources suggest he struggled to swim, others report he lost consciousness while attempting to exit the water. Bystanders attempted to provide assistance, and a second individual who entered the water was recovered safely. A post-mortem examination later confirmed the cause of death as asphyxiation due to drowning.

The second incident involved a 22-year-old German national whose body was discovered in a swimming pool at an apartment complex in Paralimni, Famagusta district, on the evening of August 24. Emergency services were notified around 21:00, but he was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. A post-mortem conducted by forensic pathologist Dr. Nicolas Charalambous confirmed the death resulted from drowning in water.

Authorities are continuing investigations into both cases. Biological samples have been collected for further laboratory testing in the Limassol case, while police in Paralimni are also awaiting final laboratory reports to conclude their investigation into the circumstances of the second tragedy.
