Ministry of Education support staff announce protest over legislative delays

Employees of the support programs at the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth (YPAN) in Cyprus have scheduled a protest for September 3, 2026, at 9:30 a.m. The demonstration will begin at the PASYDY headquarters and conclude with a march to the Presidential Palace. The decision was formalized during a general assembly held on August 24, 2026, by the trade unions PASEY-PEO and OEKDY-SEK.

The workers are protesting against the prolonged delay in implementing legislation passed on April 21, 2026, which they claim has left them without income. Specifically, indefinite-term employees who have completed 30 months of service report they have received no salary since June. The unions highlight that workers in other sectors, such as school boards and the tourism industry, are permitted to register as unemployed during work suspension periods, whereas these specific employees remain in a precarious financial state.

The trade unions are calling for the immediate intervention of the President of the Republic to resolve these systemic problems. The protest represents a direct attempt to force government action to address the persistent administrative obstacles following the legislative updates earlier this year.
