Attack on volunteers at Nea Salamina sports event in Larnaca
A violent incident occurred late on Sunday, August 23, at the auxiliary fields of the Ammochostos-Epistrophi Stadium in Larnaca, following a fan day event held by the Nea Salamina sports club. Reports on the number of attackers vary, with police estimating a group of approximately 30 individuals, while the club claims 40 to 50 masked people were involved in the assault. The assailants, armed with clubs, targeted volunteers who had remained at the site to protect event equipment.
According to official police reports, three men aged 21, 23, and 28 were injured. The 23-year-old and 28-year-old suffered injuries to their hand and head, respectively, and were treated and discharged from the Larnaca General Hospital. The 21-year-old sustained facial injuries and remains hospitalized in stable condition at the Nicosia General Hospital. The Larnaca Criminal Investigation Department (TAE) has launched an investigation into the attack and the possession of offensive weapons.
Nea Salamina has formally condemned the incident and expressed significant concern regarding the police response, citing witness accounts that authorities were alerted to suspicious individuals in the area prior to the attack.
