Investigation launched after violent attack on Nea Salamina volunteers in Larnaca
Late on Sunday, August 23, 2026, a violent attack occurred at the auxiliary football fields of the Ammochostos-Epistrofi stadium in Larnaca. Following the conclusion of a Fan Day event, a group of approximately 30 to 50 masked individuals armed with clubs attacked volunteers who remained on-site to protect equipment. Three men, aged 21, 23, and 28, were injured in the incident. Two victims were treated at Larnaca General Hospital and subsequently discharged, while the 21-year-old was transferred to Nicosia General Hospital with facial injuries; his condition is not life-threatening.
The club, Nea Salamina, has condemned the attack and expressed frustration regarding police inaction, citing reports that law enforcement had been warned about the presence of disruptive individuals in the area beforehand. Police have launched an investigation into assault and possession of offensive weapons, with the case handled by the TAE Larnaca department. Authorities are currently reviewing CCTV footage to identify the perpetrators, who witnesses reported were wearing attire associated with AEK fans. The incident has raised fears of a renewed feud between fan groups ahead of the upcoming championship. The political party AKEL has also publicly condemned the violence and joined the demand for a thorough investigation.
