Cyprus reaffirms support for Ukraine on 35th independence anniversary

On August 24, 2026, marking the 35th anniversary of Ukraine's independence, the Republic of Cyprus reaffirmed its commitment to the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity. President Nikos Christodoulides participated in a videoconference of the "Coalition of the Willing" leaders, co-chaired by British Prime Minister Andy Burnham and French President Emmanuel Macron. During the meeting, Nicosia emphasized that peace in Ukraine must be founded upon the United Nations Charter, free from external coercion. Cyprus also pledged support for coordinated European initiatives to assist Ukraine in preparing for the upcoming winter season.

Following the anniversary, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy publicly thanked President Christodoulides for his congratulatory message. Zelenskyy highlighted the pivotal role of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU in opening the first negotiation chapters for Ukraine's accession to the European Union. The Ukrainian leader underscored that Kyiv relies on continued Cypriot support for its full European integration and expressed a desire to expand bilateral cooperation in various sectors. The Cyprus Ministry of Foreign Affairs also utilized social media platforms to formally reiterate the nation's solidarity with the Ukrainian people.
