Cyprus reaffirms support for Ukraine on its 35th independence anniversary

On August 24, 2026, Cyprus reaffirmed its unwavering support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity on the occasion of the country’s 35th independence anniversary. President Nikos Christodoulides participated in a video conference of the "Alliance of the Willing" leaders, which was co-chaired by British Prime Minister Andy Burnham and French President Emmanuel Macron.

During the discussions, the Cypriot government emphasized that peace in Ukraine must be achieved based on the United Nations Charter and without external imposition. The President’s office stated that as a nation that has experienced illegal invasion and continues to endure military occupation, Cyprus remains committed to protecting internationally recognized borders. Furthermore, Cyprus declared its intent to support coordinated European efforts to assist Ukraine in preparing for the upcoming winter season.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also issued a statement on social media platforms, extending official congratulations to the Ukrainian government and its people. The diplomatic stance underscores Cyprus's continued alignment with European partners regarding the ongoing conflict and humanitarian requirements for the Ukrainian state.
