New York police investigate individuals emerging from manholes

The New York Police Department (NYPD) is investigating a viral TikTok video depicting three individuals in work uniforms and headlamps emerging from a manhole near Madison Square Garden and Penn Station in Manhattan. According to reports, the incident occurred at approximately 4 a.m. local time on Tuesday, August 19. While no arrests have been made, officials are treating the matter as an ongoing investigation.

The city's Department of Environmental Protection conducted an inspection of the local underground infrastructure and found no structural damage. Authorities have emphasized that entering the sewer system is both illegal and extremely dangerous due to the presence of hazardous gases, unstable surfaces, and flooding risks.

This incident follows similar occurrences earlier this year, including a case in May where seven men were filmed exiting manholes in Brooklyn, specifically in the Williamsburg and Gravesend areas. Previous investigations involving the NYPD's Emergency Service Unit have suggested that these activities may involve individuals exploring the city's underground network. As of now, authorities continue to monitor the situation, reiterating the severe physical risks associated with unauthorized subterranean access.
