Cyprus education ministry announces start of 2026-2027 school year

The Cypriot Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth has outlined preparations for the 2026-2027 school year, emphasizing a series of structural reforms and increased support for full-day school programs. Minister Athena Michaelidou announced that secondary education classes will commence on September 7, 2026, with staff reporting on September 1, while elementary education classes are scheduled to begin on September 14, with staff starting on September 7.

A major highlight of the new academic year is the expansion of the full-day school system. The Council of Ministers has approved an increase in the number of these institutions to 381, up from 220 in 2023, backed by a budget investment of approximately 6 million euros. Minister Michaelidou stated that these changes aim to foster student skills and better support family needs. The ministry is also addressing staffing, facility infrastructure, and climate-related improvements, including the installation of air conditioning.

Additionally, the Ministry is launching consultations regarding a potential adjustment to school schedules. Michaelidou acknowledged that this is a complex issue requiring scientific data and dialogue to balance academic requirements with social needs. Efforts are ongoing to ensure a smooth transition, despite the operational challenges typically faced at the start of any academic cycle.
