Cyprus education ministry announces start of 2026-2027 school year and reforms

The Cypriot Ministry of Education, Sports, and Youth, led by Minister Athena Michaelidou, has announced the start of the 2026-2027 academic year alongside a series of comprehensive reforms. Teachers in secondary education are scheduled to resume duties on September 1, 2026, while primary school teachers will begin on September 7, 2026. Student instruction for secondary general and technical education is set to commence on September 7, 2026, followed by primary education on September 14, 2026.

Minister Michaelidou described the process of implementing systemic changes as the greatest challenge for the sector, citing the need for political determination to address long-standing issues. Key focus areas for this year include the new teacher evaluation system, appointment protocols, infrastructure improvements, the installation of air conditioning systems, and addressing issues such as artificial intelligence, violence, and school bullying. The ministry is currently working closely with the Educational Service Commission to ensure proper staffing across all institutions. Despite initial challenges and pushback from various stakeholders during the implementation phase, the ministry maintains that these reforms are essential to creating a more student-centric educational environment.
