Cypriot teachers' unions coordinate on new appointment system proposal

Education unions in Cyprus, specifically POED, OELMEK, and OLTEK, are coordinating their stance on a new teacher appointment system proposed by the Ministry of Education. The unions received the formal proposal from Minister Athena Michaelidou in late July and are now holding internal discussions before conducting separate individual meetings with the Minister in the coming days.

At the core of the unions' concerns is the proposed registry system, which they believe requires legislative amendments. POED President Myria Vasiliou stated that the organizations aim to ensure the seamless staffing of public schools beyond 2027 while guaranteeing fair treatment for all educators, regardless of their current placement on existing lists. The unions have emphasized that they will not accept any outcome that leads to the victimization of current teachers. Their primary goal remains to seek further clarification and ensure transparency in the implementation of the new procedures.
