Cyprus overhauls lifeguard certification and staffing models for 2027

The Cypriot Ministry of Interior has announced a significant restructuring of the lifeguard service, scheduled for implementation in 2027. Following a meeting chaired by Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou, officials decided to transition the lifeguard certification process from the Cyprus Lifesaving Federation to the professional standards established by the Human Resource Development Authority (HRDA/AnAD). This change aims to modernize the evaluation of skills and knowledge for candidates.

In addition to certification reforms, the Ministry is addressing chronic staffing shortages affecting the nation's 114 lifeguard towers. Measures include reviewing the current seasonal employment model, specifically targeting the potential elimination of short-term three and four-month contracts, which have historically been difficult to fill. Authorities also intend to extend lifeguard working hours until 7:00 p.m. during the peak months of June, July, and August. By utilizing the HRDA framework, the government aims to expand training opportunities through private providers and nautical clubs, ultimately ensuring better coverage across all beaches.
