West Nile virus cases rise across Europe and Greece

As of late August 2026, the West Nile virus is experiencing a notable spread across Europe. Health authorities confirm that there is currently no specific vaccine or medication available to treat the infection, placing a strong emphasis on preventive measures and public awareness, particularly for the elderly and vulnerable populations.

In Greece, the epidemiological situation has escalated significantly. Confirmed cases have been reported in 31 municipalities across the Attica region. Furthermore, the region of Thessaly is facing a major health burden, with 29 confirmed cases, 23 of which are located in the city of Larissa. Experts caution that the actual number of infections is likely higher, as many carriers remain asymptomatic.

Greek health authorities have initiated mosquito spraying operations to curb the transmission. The public is advised to wear protective clothing, utilize insect repellents and window screens, and avoid areas with high mosquito activity, especially during evening and night hours. As the virus continues to emerge throughout the region, prevention remains the primary defense strategy for both the public and health officials.
