Tremithousa primary school parents protest removal of classroom

On August 25, 2026, parents and members of the local community at the Tremithousa Primary School in the Paphos district organized a protest to block the Education Ministry’s attempt to remove a prefabricated classroom. The ministry intended to relocate one of the school's portable units to another educational facility to meet urgent needs. Parents successfully prevented workers from removing the structure, citing that the school, which currently serves over 50 students, is already overcrowded and relies heavily on temporary infrastructure.

Contradictory views define the conflict. Parents claim that student numbers have risen from 40 to over 60 in two years and that removing a unit would force the partition of remaining spaces, compromising learning conditions. Conversely, Giorgos Giallouridis, the District Officer for Primary Education in Paphos, stated that the school has 54 students and more than enough temporary facilities to function properly. He argued the decision is based on a regional assessment of needs and that the removal does not negatively affect the school's operations.

While the current removal effort has been halted, the community continues to advocate for the construction of a permanent new regional primary school building on public land, a demand that has so far remained unaddressed by authorities.
