Police conduct wide-ranging security operations across Cyprus

Police forces in Cyprus and the British Sovereign Base Areas (SBA) conducted separate, extensive security operations over the past week to maintain public order and address criminality. In the Republic of Cyprus, overnight preventative patrols resulted in the arrest of six individuals for various offences, including illegal residency, drug possession, and assault on a police officer. Officers checked hundreds of motorists, resulting in 309 traffic citations, including 93 for speeding, and the impounding of 12 vehicles, alongside 53 inspections of commercial premises.

Simultaneously, the British Base Areas Police reported 34 arrests over the last seven days, covering offences such as driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and drug-related crimes, including three cases involving suspected cocaine. In a separate emergency mission, the SBA Police, in coordination with the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre and Cyprus Police, successfully rescued two men, aged 25 and 37, stranded 1.5 nautical miles off the coast of Dhekelia on Saturday. Authorities continue to investigate an ongoing arson case involving two vehicles in the Akrotiri region. These operations follow a series of recent drownings, prompting police to issue renewed safety warnings regarding changing sea conditions.
