Criminal investigation launched into fraudulent sick leaves for prison guards

A criminal investigation is underway in Cyprus following reports of alleged collusion between two doctors and several prison guards to obtain fraudulent medical certificates. The Audit Office submitted evidence to the Legal Service suggesting that a physician and an orthopedic surgeon systematically issued unjustified sick leaves, which were reportedly not registered in the national health system, GeSY. These actions allowed prison guards to secure extended absences while avoiding timely medical board examinations.

The investigation, led by the Criminal Investigation Department (TAE) of the Police Headquarters, follows a comprehensive report published by the Audit Office in March 2026. This report highlighted persistent irregularities in the utilization of sick leaves by prison staff. Authorities are currently in the initial stages of the probe, focusing on analyzing medical certificates and interviewing individuals involved.

Once the police conclude their gathering of evidence, the case file will be forwarded to the Legal Service to determine if criminal charges will be filed against the doctors and other involved parties. The inquiry remains active as investigators seek to verify the validity of these leaves and identify the extent of the alleged state fraud.
