Cyprus Ministry of Health puts professional indemnity insurance regulations for doctors to public consultation

The Cyprus Ministry of Health has officially launched a public consultation regarding the draft "Medical Doctors (Medical Negligence Insurance) Regulations of 2026". This legislative step aims to formalize the procedures and terms for mandatory professional indemnity insurance, which was originally established by a legislative amendment passed in July 2024 and entered into force on January 26, 2025.

The proposed regulations specify that all doctors practicing in the Republic of Cyprus must maintain medical negligence insurance, though this coverage may be provided through individual policies or employer-sponsored plans. The draft sets a minimum indemnity limit of €450,000 per incident, with a total annual coverage cap also fixed at €450,000 for individual practitioners. These figures were confirmed by the Ministry to ensure adequate protection for both medical professionals and patients.

Interested parties, including medical associations and individual practitioners, are invited to submit their feedback, comments, and observations via the official "i-Diavouleysi" digital platform. The consultation period is open until September 18, 2026. Following the conclusion of this period, the Ministry will evaluate the input received to finalize the legislative framework governing mandatory professional insurance for the medical sector in Cyprus.
