Human Rights Observatory at Neapolis University Paphos enters second year

The Human Rights Observatory at Neapolis University Paphos has officially entered its second year of operation. Established in 2024 within the university’s Department of History, Politics and International Studies, the initiative remains the only university-based observatory in Cyprus dedicated exclusively to human rights.

Led by Dr. Eleni Gavriel, a lecturer in international economic law and human rights, the Observatory focuses on three primary pillars: academic research, student training, and public engagement. Dr. Gavriel stated that the initiative aims to provide systematic monitoring and evaluation of human rights implementation within the Republic of Cyprus. The institution serves as a bridge between academic research and society by offering open-access, evidence-based knowledge to the public, policymakers, and various institutions.

Building on the work conducted during the 2024/2025 academic year involving students, graduates, and early-career researchers, the Observatory plans to continue its mission of contributing to the national discourse. The center seeks to provide reliable tools and documentation to ensure that its academic output translates into effective social impact and increased public awareness regarding human rights developments in Cyprus.
