Mazotos residents to protest against planned desalination plant
The Initiative Group for the Rescue of the Mazotos Coast has announced a protest against the government's plan to install a mobile desalination plant in the Petountas area. The demonstration is scheduled to take place on Saturday, August 29, at 18:00 in the main square of Mazotos, near the Church of Saint George.
Organizers argue that the project constitutes a heavy industrial installation that will cause irreversible damage to both terrestrial and marine ecosystems. Specifically, they highlight the potential destruction of local sea grass meadows (Posidonia) and the degradation of the natural landscape, which they believe will negatively impact the quality of life for residents. The group is formally demanding a reversal of the government's decision to proceed with the facility.
This event marks the second public protest organized by local residents regarding this specific infrastructure project. Beyond these demonstrations, the community has already initiated legal action, having filed a court case challenging the government's decision to permit the desalination unit in the area.
