Eighteen-year-old arrested for counterfeit currency in Famagusta
Police in the Famagusta district arrested an 18-year-old male on Monday, August 24, 2026, on charges related to the possession and circulation of counterfeit banknotes. The operation began after officers from the Crime Combating Unit received information regarding two 50-euro notes that shared the same serial number, which had been recovered from a local business employee.
Following an investigation, officers identified the suspect and conducted a body search, finding two additional 50-euro notes with the identical serial number in his possession. A subsequent search of the hotel room where the suspect was staying yielded 19 more counterfeit 50-euro notes, all bearing the same serial number. In total, 23 counterfeit notes were seized as evidence.
The suspect was taken into custody for a flagrant offense. He is scheduled to appear before the Famagusta District Court on Tuesday, August 25, to face a request for a remand order. The Famagusta Criminal Investigation Department (CID) continues to investigate the scope of the distribution and potential accomplices involved in the case.
