Cyprus approves national strategy for multiple sclerosis

On August 25, 2026, the Cyprus Council of Ministers officially approved a new national strategy and the formation of a national committee dedicated to multiple sclerosis. Health Minister Neofytos Charalambidis stated that this move aims to significantly enhance care standards and improve the quality of life for patients living with the condition.

Currently, approximately 2,700 people live with multiple sclerosis in Cyprus, with roughly 109 new cases documented annually. The newly adopted strategy is structured around four primary pillars: the establishment of a national registry for data utilization, efforts in prevention and early diagnosis, rehabilitation and support services, and a focus on research and innovation. The newly formed national committee will serve as an advisory body, responsible for drafting and monitoring a comprehensive action plan complete with specific objectives and timelines to address the needs of those affected.

This initiative represents a strategic shift toward a more human-centered, modern framework of care in Cyprus. By systematizing data and prioritizing early clinical intervention, the government intends to streamline support for patients throughout their treatment and rehabilitation journey.
