Government to revise security details for political officials

The government is preparing to implement changes regarding the security details assigned to political officials. Minister of Justice Constantinos Fitiris clarified on August 25, 2026, following a cabinet meeting at the Presidential Palace, that these changes will not be enacted via legislation but through an official decision by the Council of Ministers.

The new framework will involve a case-by-case assessment for the allocation of guards to current and former officials, as well as political party leaders. This shift follows reports that Minister Fitiris himself has requested the removal of security personnel from his own residence by writing to the Chief of Police. The government has already requested a risk assessment report from the Security Risk Committee to guide the upcoming reorganization. The final decision is expected to be finalized within the coming days.
