EU Committee on Petitions addresses the status of Varosha and property rights

Elena Nevado del Campo, coordinator of the European People's Party in the European Parliament's Committee on Petitions (PETI), stated on August 25, 2026, that the status of the fenced-off area of Varosha remains a priority for the European Union. In an interview with the Cyprus News Agency, she highlighted that the protection of property rights for displaced persons continues to be a central concern, as developments on the ground threaten to complicate future settlement efforts.

The PETI committee has been monitoring the situation for years and reviewed the case again in February 2026. Nevado del Campo clarified that while the committee cannot directly rule on property ownership or award damages, it exercises parliamentary oversight by requesting information from the European Commission and ensuring that the issue remains on the EU policy agenda. She noted that PETI serves as a vital platform for citizens to voice concerns, though it operates within specific legal limits regarding its investigative and executive capacities.
