Member of parliament Georgios Pamporidis warns of organized crime links to politics

On August 25, 2026, during an appearance on the Alpha broadcast 'Alpha Kalokairi', Democratic Rally (DISY) Member of Parliament Georgios Pamporidis alleged that organized crime has penetrated the political sphere in Cyprus. He specifically stated that criminal figures currently possess direct access to politicians, urging the state to significantly strengthen security mechanisms to protect national institutions and public safety.

Beyond his security concerns, Pamporidis criticized the inefficiencies of the public sector, specifically targeting high rates of sick leave among civil servants and the lack of decisive executive action against labor unions. He argued that these failures hamper the ability of the state to meet essential public needs, such as healthcare staffing.

Regarding his political future, Pamporidis officially announced his intention to pursue the DISY nomination for the 2028 presidential elections. He clarified his candidacy position, confirming he will seek the party's backing regardless of potential internal competition during the nomination process.
