Diplomatic tensions rise over Cyprus peace process and crossing points

One month after UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres departed from Cyprus, the island’s peace process remains stalled. Tensions have intensified ahead of a scheduled meeting on August 26 between Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides and Tufan Erhurman, which aims to discuss the opening of new crossing points. The UN views the inability to reach an agreement on these measures as a negative indicator of the parties' political will to resolve the broader conflict, noting that a commitment to open these crossings was made nearly two years ago.

Simultaneously, a diplomatic dispute has erupted regarding the Turkish Cypriot side. The Turkish Cypriot negotiator, Mehmet Dana, recently invited foreign diplomats to a briefing using official stationery from the unrecognized northern regime. This action drew sharp criticism from the Cypriot government, with the Foreign Ministry characterizing it as a provocative move. While the Foreign Ministry focused on the formal implications of the invitation’s letterhead, critics argue that such preoccupation with symbols often obscures the lack of substantive progress in the negotiations themselves, casting doubt on the government's strategic approach to the Cyprus issue.
