OSAK and Ministry of Labour discuss pension rights for informal caregivers

On Tuesday, August 25, 2026, representatives from the Cyprus Federation of Patients' Associations (OSAK) met with the Minister of Labour and Social Insurance, Marinos Mousiouttas, to address the pension rights of informal caregivers and individuals with disabilities.

The discussions focused on the state's recognition of the role played by informal caregivers, who often reduce their professional activity or exit the labor market entirely to provide care for their loved ones. OSAK emphasized that long-term absence from work or limited professional engagement negatively impacts these individuals' future pension security. The federation proposed specific legislative measures to ensure that these caregivers do not face financial instability in retirement due to their caregiving responsibilities.

Following the meeting, both parties agreed to remain in continuous consultation as the government works to finalize the legislative framework for broader pension reforms. The Ministry will evaluate OSAK’s recommendations to determine how they can be effectively integrated into the upcoming pension system updates. This dialogue serves as a key step in ensuring that the state provides practical support to those who dedicate their lives to the care of others, with the process of policy formation currently ongoing.
