Cyprus meteorological department issues yellow warning for extreme heat

The Cyprus Department of Meteorology has issued a yellow weather warning for extreme high temperatures affecting the island’s interior today, Wednesday, August 26, 2026. The alert is in effect from 13:30 to 16:00, with maximum temperatures in inland areas expected to reach approximately 40 degrees Celsius. Coastal areas are forecast to remain cooler, with temperatures around 32 degrees Celsius on the west coast and 34 degrees Celsius on other coasts, while higher mountainous regions will see temperatures near 29 degrees Celsius.

Seasonal low pressure is currently influencing the region, leading to generally clear skies following the dissipation of morning mist and low clouds. Winds will initially be light, transitioning from variable to southwesterly or northwesterly at speeds of 3 to 4 Beaufort, and occasionally reaching 4 to 5 Beaufort in southern and eastern coastal areas. Authorities have advised the public to exercise caution, avoid prolonged sun exposure during peak hours, and remain updated on potential changes in weather conditions.

Looking ahead, meteorological forecasts indicate a change in the weather pattern by Saturday, August 29. A disturbance approaching from the north is expected to bring isolated rain and thunderstorms, accompanied by a noticeable drop in temperatures across the island.
