Twenty-year-old arrested in Nicosia for smuggling two kilograms of cannabis

On August 25, 2026, the Cyprus Drug Law Enforcement Unit (YKAN) arrested a 20-year-old man in Nicosia following the seizure of approximately two kilograms of cannabis. The authorities acted on intelligence regarding a suspicious package arriving from abroad, which was intercepted at a local courier company.

Upon attempting to collect the package, the 20-year-old suspect was apprehended by YKAN officers for flagrant offenses. During a subsequent search of his person, authorities also discovered an additional two grams of cannabis in his possession. The suspect was taken into custody immediately following the discovery.

The incident is part of an ongoing police operation aimed at curbing the importation and distribution of illegal narcotics within Cyprus. The Nicosia branch of YKAN is continuing its investigation into the matter. The suspect is scheduled to appear before the Nicosia District Court on August 26, 2026, where prosecutors will request his formal detention pending further legal proceedings.
