Russia and Ukraine exchange prisoners as larger swaps are discussed

On August 24, 2026, Russia and Ukraine conducted an exchange of prisoners of war, with each side returning 10 individuals. The swap was facilitated through Belarus, marking a departure from previous diplomatic practices where such exchanges were not conducted via this territory, according to the Belarusian news agency BELTA.

Following this event, Russian Commissioner for Human Rights Yana Landratava stated that Moscow and Kiev are currently finalizing lists for a larger prisoner exchange. Since the conflict began in February 2022, thousands of soldiers have been returned to their respective countries. A notable agreement in May allowed for the exchange of approximately 1,000 prisoners, a milestone achieved through mediation involving the United States.
