Developments in the Greece-Cyprus electrical interconnection project

The Greece-Cyprus electrical interconnection project is moving forward with the participation of the French group Meridiam, which holds a majority stake. Following the suspension of bathymetric surveys in July 2024 due to tensions in the sea area off Kasos, the Greek government, represented by spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis, confirmed that the project will proceed as planned. Authorities emphasized that Greece remains committed to the implementation and will respond appropriately to any attempts at obstruction or violations of sovereign rights.

Ankara is closely monitoring the project, stating that it does not oppose international connectivity infrastructure but requires prior diplomatic coordination for activities in maritime zones where it claims sovereignty. Turkish officials argue this process is necessary to avoid conflicts or overlapping operations. Conversely, the Greek side maintains that it will not tolerate external interference, asserting its position as a sovereign state while proceeding with the cable installation alongside its French partner.
