EAC advances battery storage projects at Dhekelia and Moni power stations

The Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) is implementing battery energy storage systems at its Dhekelia and Moni power stations to minimize renewable energy curtailments and enhance grid efficiency. These initiatives aim to better utilize green energy, particularly when paired with photovoltaic systems.

At the Dhekelia Power Station, the EAC is installing an 80MW/160MWh storage system. The contract for this project, valued at €33,733,640, was awarded to CYTA and commenced on February 9, 2026. Commercial operation is expected to begin by mid-September 2027. Simultaneously, the EAC is developing a larger 100MW/200MWh system at the Moni Power Station. For this project, the Cyprus Energy Regulatory Authority (CERA) has already issued a construction permit, and an application for connection terms has been submitted to the Transmission System Operator of Cyprus (TSOC).

While the Dhekelia project is under construction, the Moni installation remains in the licensing phase. The EAC is currently awaiting an environmental impact assessment report and further approval from the Limassol District Local Government Organisation to finalize its planning permits. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to strengthen regional power generation hubs and support the integration of renewable sources into the national electricity grid.
