Pavlos Kontides competes in the 2026 World Sailing Championship

Cypriot sailor Pavlos Kontides is currently competing at the 2026 ILCA 7 World Championship held in Dun Laoghaire, Ireland. The event features 141 athletes from 45 countries. Entering the competition, Kontides expressed confidence in his preparation, despite facing injury earlier in the season, and emphasized his experience as a key factor in navigating the high level of competition.

Following the first two days of racing, Kontides successfully advanced to the Gold fleet. After completing five qualifying races, he holds 13th place overall with 26 penalty points. His performance included a notable first-place finish in the fourth race, along with placements of 11th, 13th, and a discardable 16th place. The competition format transitions to the final series starting Thursday, August 27.

Athletes will participate in six additional races through Saturday, August 29, to determine the top ten finalists. These finalists will then compete in the concluding medal races scheduled for Sunday, August 30. Kontides, representing the Limassol Nautical Club, aims to leverage his previous experience at this venue, where he earned a silver medal in a coach regatta earlier in June.
