Pavlos Kontides competes in the 2026 World Sailing Championship
Cypriot sailor Pavlos Kontides has commenced his campaign at the 2026 World Sailing Championship held in Dun Laoghaire, Ireland. The competition, which serves as the final major event of the year, features 141 athletes representing 45 nations. Kontides enters the event following a successful preparation period, having previously secured a silver medal at a coach regatta in the same location in late June.
Following the completion of the first day of the championship, which involved three preliminary races, Kontides currently holds 17th place overall. Competing in the blue fleet, his performance included an 11th place finish in the first race, a 1st place victory in the second, and a 13th place in the third. Preliminary races are scheduled to continue through Wednesday.
Following the qualification phase, the field will move into the final rounds which conclude this Sunday. The top ten sailors in the overall standings will then qualify for the final two medal races to determine the podium winners. Kontides expressed confidence in his fitness and experience despite an injury that hindered his performance earlier in the season.
