Tensions over Barcelona football camp in occupied Cyprus

Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman has publicly criticized efforts to cancel a Barcelona football club training camp scheduled to take place in the occupied areas of Nicosia. The controversy arose after the Cyprus Football Association (CFA) sent letters to Barcelona and UEFA requesting the cancellation of the event, arguing that it takes place in an internationally unrecognized territory. Erhürman described the obstruction of such youth activities as a defeat for humanity, asserting that the disappointment or exclusion of youth from either community due to the Cyprus problem is unacceptable.

Erhürman further argued that foreign participation in events in the north does not imply recognition of the “TRNC,” drawing a parallel to Greek Cypriot participation in events held in Turkey. Supporting this stance, Fuat Oktay, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Turkish Grand National Assembly, and Fikri Ataoglu, a senior official in the north, labeled the attempts to block the camp as unacceptable political obstacles. The situation highlights the ongoing struggle between political recognition issues and the desire for youth integration in sports and cultural activities.
