Tufan Erhürman comments on youth sports and cultural access following Barcelona camp controversy

Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman recently commented on the ongoing controversy surrounding a planned Barcelona football camp in the occupied north. He argued that young people from both the Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot communities should not be denied global opportunities due to the broader Cyprus problem. Erhürman expressed his view that the disappointment of one community should not be a source of satisfaction for the other.

From a legal perspective, Erhürman asserted that the participation of international artists or youth groups in events held in the north does not equate to the international recognition of the "TRNC." He drew a parallel to the participation of Greek Cypriots in events held in Turkey, noting that such involvement does not imply Turkey’s recognition of the Republic of Cyprus. While stating that these events should not be viewed through a political lens, he referenced statements made by the UN, the EU, and the Council of Europe since 2004 regarding the need to end the isolation of Turkish Cypriots, should a political context be required.
