Greece to acquire two Italian FREMM frigates

The Greek Ministry of National Defense officially announced the upcoming acquisition of two Italian FREMM-class frigates (Bergamini type). The Implementing Arrangement for the purchase is scheduled to be signed in Rome on September 8, 2026, by representatives from the Greek General Directorate for Defense Investments and Armaments and their Italian counterparts. The signing ceremony will be attended by Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias and Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto.

This agreement follows a Memorandum of Understanding and a Declaration of Intent signed in September 2025 and a subsequent approval by the Government Council for Foreign Affairs and Defense (KYSEA) in May 2026. The contract covers the initial procurement of two vessels, with an option for two additional ships in the future. The deal also outlines technical and financial terms, a maintenance framework, and the involvement of the Greek defense industry. The first frigate, named Carlo Bergamini (F-590), is expected to be transferred to the Hellenic Navy between 2028 and 2029.

These new additions will join the fleet alongside the four FDI-class frigates and the modernized MEKO-class vessels. The Ministry stated that this expansion is intended to enhance the operational capabilities of the Hellenic Navy to protect national sovereignty in the Aegean Sea and the Eastern Mediterranean.
