Cyprus U-17 national football team begins preparation under new head coach
The Cyprus U-17 national football team has officially commenced its training cycle under the guidance of newly appointed head coach Nikos Nikolaou. The initial preparatory phase began on August 24 at the Pyrga Community Stadium, focusing on domestic players while excluding those currently competing abroad. Coach Nikolaou has expressed optimism regarding the team's potential, emphasizing that the current roster possesses significant talent and quality essential for achieving future competitive goals.
The training schedule for the squad continues with four sessions planned for August 31, September 1, 2, and 3, 2026, all held at the Pyrga Community Stadium. These sessions remain closed to the public and parents. The squad list includes players from major Cypriot clubs, such as APOEL, Omonia, Pafos FC, and Aris Limassol. These preparations are part of a broader strategy aimed at securing qualification in upcoming international tournaments.
Looking ahead, the team is scheduled to play two away friendly matches against Lithuania on September 8 and 10, 2026. These matches serve as vital preparation for the official UEFA qualification campaign, which is slated to take place in Cyprus toward the end of October.
