Catastrophic glacier collapse and flooding at the Nepal-Tibet border

On August 26, 2026, a massive glacier collapse triggered devastating landslides and flash floods along the Nepal-Tibet border. The disaster swept through valleys, obliterating infrastructure, roads, and settlements, with the initial seismic tremors later confirmed by the USGS as a result of the debris flow rather than an earthquake. As of August 28, the death toll has reached at least 472 people—469 in Nepal and three in Tibet—with over 1,400 individuals reported missing, including hundreds of foreign tourists from more than 30 countries. Rescue efforts remain extremely challenging due to difficult terrain and the destruction of access routes.

Authorities in both Nepal and China have suspended search and rescue operations as of August 28 due to the urgent risk of a glacial lake outburst flood. A damming effect caused by the debris has created a reservoir that is now overflowing, prompting warnings for residents to evacuate to higher ground. Over 100 workers remain trapped in a tunnel at the Trisuli hydroelectric construction site, and international aid, including supplies from the UN, EU, and several countries, is being mobilized. UNICEF has reported that over 17,000 children are in need of immediate assistance.
