Femicide reported in Rhodope, Greece

On August 26, 2026, a 44-year-old woman was murdered in the village of Dialampi in the Rhodope region of Greece. The perpetrator, her husband (reported as 53 or 54 years old), stabbed her multiple times using two knives before attempting suicide by consuming fuel and self-inflicting wounds. The attack occurred during a visit the victim made to celebrate their 16-year-old daughter's birthday; she had been living separately and working in Thassos. One of the couple's children, present in the home, alerted the authorities to the crime.

The suspect was transported to Komotini Hospital and later transferred to Sismanogleio Hospital, where he remains under police guard and is reported to be out of danger. Local reports indicate that the couple had a history of domestic violence, including a 2022 incident in Heraklion, Crete, which resulted in the man's arrest following the woman’s formal complaint for threats. The victim had been planning to initiate divorce proceedings to escape the abusive relationship.
