Cargo export restrictions imposed at Ercan airport due to safety failures

Turkish Airlines (THY) has indefinitely suspended all export cargo shipments from Ercan Airport in the occupied territory of Cyprus, citing significant security gaps and non-compliance with international standards. Additionally, the airline Pegasus has restricted its transport services at the airport to dry cargo only. The measures have caused an immediate disruption for local businesses, particularly those exporting liquid goods and those supplying duty-free retail outlets.

The decision follows a security assessment conducted approximately one year ago by the Turkish State Airports Authority (DHMI), which identified roughly 40 infrastructural deficiencies. Of these, 18 were specifically related to the customs and cargo handling areas. Despite the lapse of a year since the audit, the facility's operator, T&T, and the relevant local authorities have reportedly failed to implement the necessary corrective actions. Reports also highlight that the new airport construction project lacked the mandatory specialized facility required for proper security screenings.
